About Via Francigena

The Via Francigena is an ancient pilgrim trail to Rome starting in Canterbury, England, crossing the channel to France and continuing across Switzerland before reaching Italy.

In medieval times, the Via Francigena was an important road for pilgrims heading south to Rome and like the Camino de Santiago, this trail is a European Cultural Route designated by the Council of Europe.

The route in Italy is well maintained and accessible, it is very well set up to accommodate walkers and cyclists, with reasonable accommodation and very welcoming hosts to be found in towns and villages along the route. The scenery is simply stunning.
