Science says ‘arrivederci’ to Italy’s Margherita Hack: the ‘lady of the stars’

Italy’s Margherita Hack was not only a highly-respected astrophysicist but a popular science writer, public intellectual and civil rights activist.

She died last weekend- 29th of June 2013– at the age of 91.

Born in Florence she became one of the most important astrophysicists in Italy contributing to the spectral classification of many stars.  The 8558 Hack asteroid, discovered in 1995, was named in her honour.

“You have to be combative, not timid” she once said; as the first woman to run an Italian astronomical observatory at Trieste from 1964 to 1987, she certainly lived by her word!
